Sara Hemsley (she/her)

Integrative Humanistic Counsellor MBACP

Portland Road, Hove BN3

About Me

Hello, my name is Sara. I'm an Integrative Humanistic counsellor and specialise in helping clients with anxiety, issues around racial identity and supporting clients through bereavement. I also have experience working with clients from the LGBTQ+ community - particularly working with clients during their transition. In addition, I have supported clients with borderline personality disorders, depression, burnout and have experienced historical abuse and trauma to better understand and accept themselves in order to make the changes needed to improve their lives.

Bereavement:
During my time volunteering for a local hospice, I saw the profound impact grief has on people. It can turn our world upside down and completely eliminate any joy in our lives. For clients who were carers for the deceased, they may feel lost and unsure what their purpose is now that their loved one has passed. Other than sadness, there may be feelings of anger or guilt that may be holding you back. By exploring your feelings around the loss and your relationship with your loved one, you can learn to find a way forward whilst honouring your lost loved one.

Anxiety and self-esteem:
Issues with anxiety and self-esteem can have such an intrusive impact on our lives. It can stop us from doing the things we love or connecting with others because we may feel we're not good enough, or we can't handle certain situations. By exploring these feelings we can identify their causes, learn to understand them and then challenge them, so that we can begin to live more fulfilling lives and build healthier relationships.

Racial identity:
As someone from a mixed ethnic background, I understand the impact our cultures can have on our lives and how we see the world. It can be lonely if it feels no one can relate or understand your personal experiences. I have helped clients explore their racial identity, their concerns about where they fit in and their experiences of racial discrimination.

I understand that choosing to come to therapy is often a decision not made lightly and can be very daunting. In our sessions, we would only work at the pace you feel comfortable with, and you will not be pushed to go deeper into issues you don't feel ready to. It's important that our work is collaborative and that you get a choice in how your therapy progresses.

You are the expert of your own experience; you decide what you want to bring to counselling, and I will listen and be alongside you through this journey. I will ask questions and notice themes or connections with you to help with self-reflection and putting changes in place. I will also gently challenge negative thought patterns that may be holding you back.

If you are interested in counselling please feel free to get in touch and book an initial session.
